Job Summary
The Communications and Outreach Coordinator supports Marion County’s economic development, business retention, tourism promotion, and community engagement goals. This position manages communications and digital content, coordinates events, conducts business outreach, and maintains the organization’s CRM and engagement systems. The role blends creative work, community interaction, and structured project management.
Job Duties
Podcast & Newsletter Coordination
- Schedule, coordinate, and help produce a regular economic development podcast featuring local businesses, partners, and community initiatives.
- Generate, edit, and distribute newsletters highlighting economic development activity, local business stories, tourism assets, and annual program updates.
Social Media & Digital Content
- Manage and moderate all organizational social media channels (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, X/Twitter), ensuring consistent, timely, and professional communication.
- Create visual-first digital content such as short videos, photos, infographics, and reels that highlight county initiatives, business success stories, and tourism promotion.
- Develop and execute targeted advertising campaigns across digital platforms, including maximizing free marketing opportunities provided through the Iowa Tourism Office.
Event Planning & Impact Awards Coordination
- Lead coordination of the annual economic development event, including the Impact (or similarly named) Awards program.
- Manage event logistics, sponsorship outreach, vendor coordination, marketing, program content, and post-event evaluation.
Business Retention & Expansion (BRE)
- Organize and conduct scheduled visits with small- and medium-sized businesses throughout Marion County.
- Collect qualitative and quantitative feedback and track follow-up actions in the CRM system.
- Assist businesses by connecting them with state and local resources, workforce programs, and partner organizations.
CRM Management
- Originate, build, and maintain Marion County Development’s CRM system to track businesses, contacts, leads, projects, and engagement activities.
- Ensure accurate, up-to-date data entry and generate periodic reports for internal evaluation and board-level reporting.
Tourism Marketing & Promotion
- Coordinate with the Iowa Tourism Office to utilize free and in-kind advertising opportunities.
- Create tourism-focused content that enhances Marion County’s visibility as a destination for recreation, events, business activity, and talent attraction.
Administrative & Organizational Support
- Maintain website content, internal documents, outreach materials, and organizational data.
- Assist with grant applications, presentations, board materials, and general administrative tasks as assigned.
Job Qualifications
Required Education and/or Experience
- Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or two years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with social media management and digital content creation.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work independently.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Education and/or Experience
- Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with tourism marketing, destination promotion, or working with state/local tourism agencies.
- Familiarity with CRM platforms or demonstrated ability to build and manage CRM systems.
- Experience with podcast production, event coordination, or public engagement.
- Proficiency with digital creation tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, video editing apps).
