Job Summary

 

This position is a Full-Time/Civil Service Appointment.  The starting wage is $32.56/hour.    Commensurate with experience.   This position is eligible for a sign-on bonus of up to ten thousand dollars depending on years of experience and qualifications for certified peace officers. 

**State of Iowa Certified peace officers are NOT REQUIRED to do POST or physical agility testing. **

The testing time and date will be on June 6, 2026, at 9 am.  Letters will be sent out to eligible applicants.

Job Duties

Purpose:

Enforces federal, state, and county laws and ordinances to protect life and property and maintain public safety. Provides services to citizens, responds to incidents, and conducts investigations to prevent and solve crimes within Marion County

Essential Functions and Other Details of the Job:

  • Patrols assigned areas of the county to deter and detect criminal activity, enforce traffic laws, and respond to calls for service.
  • Responds to emergencies, accidents, and medical calls; provides assistance, rescue, and first aid until medical personnel arrive.
  • Conducts traffic stops, issues warnings or citations, and arrests violators when appropriate.
  • Performs business checks, welfare checks, assists stranded motorists, and provides general public assistance.
  • Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations, interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects, and gathers statements and evidence, completes accurate reports, documentation, and case files for prosecution.
  • Executes arrest warrants, search warrants, and court orders in compliance with Iowa law.
  • Testifies in court proceedings, presenting factual and accurate information based on investigative findings and reports.
  • Serves civil papers including subpoenas, notices, petitions, garnishments, writs, protective orders, evictions, and other court documents.
  • Enforces court orders such as executions, levies, and mental health commitments.
  • Provides courthouse security and transports inmates or persons in custody between facilities or court hearings.
  • Performs daily inspections and maintenance of patrol vehicles, equipment, and uniforms to ensure operational readiness and professional appearance.
  • Maintains familiarity with patrol areas, local residents, businesses, and community issues to enhance safety, crime prevention, and public relations.
  • Participates in required training programs to maintain proficiency in law enforcement procedures, safety, and emergency response.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid Iowa Driver’s License
  • Iowa Certified Peace Officer
  • First Aid/CPR/AED
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Ability to pass office testing standards
