Marion County Development Unveils "Set Your Pace" Initiative to Elevate Tourism, Community Pride and Economic Growth

MARION COUNTY, Iowa — Every day, nearly 9,300 people commute into Marion County to work, drawn by world-class employers, thriving communities and a high quality of life. Marion County Development believes the next step is ensuring more of those workers, and visitors from across Iowa and beyond, experience everything the county has to offer after their eight-to-five.

That's the vision behind "Set Your Pace," Marion County Development's expanded tourism and place-branding initiative designed to showcase the people, places and experiences that make Marion County one of Iowa's most dynamic destinations. From the shores of Lake Red Rock to the historic streets of Pella, the energy of Knoxville, and the welcoming charm of each of Marion County's communities, the campaign encourages visitors to experience the county at whatever pace suits them, whether that's an adventurous weekend outdoors, a relaxing getaway, or discovering local events and small businesses.

"Set Your Pace isn't just a slogan, it's an invitation," said Dan Nieland, Executive Director of Marion County Development. "Whether someone comes for a weekend at Lake Red Rock, a festival, a new career opportunity or is searching for a place to put down roots, we want them to discover a community where they can build the lifestyle they're looking for."

The initiative reflects Marion County Development's commitment to strengthening tourism while supporting the organization's broader mission of economic and community development. While attracting visitors remains a key priority, Marion County Development views tourism as a catalyst for long-term growth.

Home to Iowa's largest lake, Lake Red Rock anchors the county's outdoor recreation opportunities with boating, paddling, camping, hiking, biking, beaches and wildlife viewing. Combined with nationally recognized festivals, historic downtowns, locally owned restaurants, sprint car racing, wineries, breweries and welcoming small-town charm, Marion County offers visitors the opportunity to experience Iowa at their own pace.

To better tell that story, Marion County Development is expanding its tourism outreach through several new initiatives, including:

  • A refreshed collection of tourism-focused webpages that make it easier for visitors to discover attractions, dining, lodging, events and curated itineraries.
  • An expanded social media strategy highlighting hidden gems, local businesses, outdoor adventures and authentic stories from across Marion County.
  • Seasonal marketing campaigns encouraging visitors to experience the county throughout the year - from lake adventures and summer events to breathtaking fall colors, holiday traditions and community festivals.
  • Increased collaboration with local businesses, chambers, tourism partners and community organizations to amplify Marion County's story through a unified regional approach.
  • New visitor-focused events and activations that encourage residents and travelers alike to explore more of Marion County.

"When people experience Marion County firsthand, they begin to imagine themselves here," Nieland said. "Tourism supports our small businesses, fills our restaurants and hotels, creates opportunities for entrepreneurs, and ultimately strengthens our workforce and communities. Every visit has the potential to become something more."

Residents are encouraged to rediscover the places in their own backyard, while visitors are invited to explore everything from scenic lake views and outdoor adventure to local festivals, family attractions and unforgettable small-town hospitality.
