Recorder was created by the first legislative assembly of the Territory of Iowa
in 1839.

Iowa Birth Certificate Exchange Offered
If you were issued a wallet-sized birth certificate between May 1993 and October
2009, the Iowa Department of Public Health will exchange it for a complete birth
certificate suitable for identification purposes.

The Recorder collects real estate transfer
tax for the Department of Revenue, of which a portion stays in the county. The
County Recorder issues hunting and fishing licenses, registers and titles boats,
snowmobiles and ATV’s, conducts federal and state tax lien searches and spends
many hours making available numerous programs for the Department of Natural
Resources. The Recorder also collects use tax for the Department of Revenue and
works closely with the Secretary of State’s office on Uniform Commercial Codes
(UCC) and corporate filings. On July 1, 1997 the Recorder’s Office took over
vital records from the Clerk of Courts. The Recorder’s Office now issues all
marriage licenses, register birth, death and marriage certificates, certify
vital records for birth, death and marriages.
The Recorder now records or retains on file, a wide variety of important
documents such as deeds, mortgages, contracts, condemnations, easements, federal
and state tax liens, surveys, trade names, UCC filings, Article of
Incorporations, military service records, as well as numerous other valuable
documents. The Recorder’s duties are defined by state statues and established by
state agencies through administrative actions. Below are listed specific duties

Other Responsibilities
Collects
real estate transfer tax on conveyances of property, a portion which is retained
in Marion County's general fund.

public.
Collects
and reports auditor's fee on transfer of property.

records available for genealogy research.
